Arrival in Brussels

After a slightly annoying flight delay getting us to Brussels an hour or so late, my friend Lesley and I were immediately struck with how approachable everything seemed in Belgium. We had no trouble locating the train station (although the ticketing was a little confusing... it seems you can't use the machines unless you're a Belgian local), and within minutes a super friendly Belgian was offering to make sure we got to the correct stop, even explaining to the conductor why we didn't have our tickets yet. We then had a great chat with him and another traveller on the train trip... getting tips for what we should see over our weekend. The holiday had started off on the right foot!
As it was late, we knew we would be able to make it into the centre of the city by public transport, but realised we'd have to walk to the hotel from there as the other trains would have stopped for the night... not really a problem though, as we had intentionally booked a centrally located hotel for just this reason. I had printed off some instructions from Multimap to help us out, but unfortunately they were incorrect and we had a little stress trying to track down our spot, especially as it was gone midnight and the area, although convenient, wasn't the nicest at that time of night. Finally, in broken French, we ascertained from a cabbie that we were close by and managed to check in with no further dramas. Drifting off to sleep we set our alarms so we could have brekkie and then head for Brugge the following morning...
