Red Bull Races, Detroit River

Red Bull races Detroit River
Although not a sunny day, it was pleasantly comfortable to enjoy the Red Bull races along the river in Detroit. We had tickets to sit on the river walk in front of the Renaissance Center.  I'm glad we chose to do this instead of just parking along the river. It was a safe and clean area. In fact, we found the entire area of Detroit that we were at to be very clean and we never felt unsafe. There was plenty of security and all of the police, security, ground keepers and concession people were very pleasant and helpful.

There was lots of seating, but you could also bring folding chairs and sit right at the water's edge. The view was great and there was a jumbo screen close by to see the replays and interviews from the Canadian side.
Cute little guy stole our attention!
You could also purchase Red Bull products (of couse) Heineken beer, burgers fries, hot dogs, nachos and so on. There was also tons of Red Bull race merchandise.

I took most of the pictures with my small point and shoot camera. Do you know how hard it is to catch these racing planes with one of those? But by the final 4 flights I had my timing down pretty good for most of the pictures. We also brought the Cannon DS10 and a telephoto lens so I'll add those pictures when my husband can help me with the download. I had to zoom in the maximum to get any detail, then crop and zoom again when posting. Unfortunatly this makes the pictures grainy, and you can see how fuzzy they really are. The Cannon pictures will be much better.

Before the race we were entertained with several types of planes including a biplane, jets and helicopters.
The Red Bull parachuters performed some kind of stunt, but it was on the Canadian side so we really couldn't see what was going on. There were also interviews and stories of the planes, the pilots and races in other countries featured on the jumbo screen. All of the race rules were explained and how the penalties are given for excessive G-force, altitude, speed,  improper alignment  through the pylons and my favorite - hitting the pylons!

Come on, admit it, you all want to see those pylons blow apart! Luckily one was hit (missed the picture opportunity) and we were able to watch the live video of the boat rushing out to bring the guys out to reset. The whole process must of took 2 minutes - amazingly fast! Funny thing - when the pylon was being inflated one of the guys held onto the top. The pylon picked him up as it straightened. The guy must of done this a lot because he just graefully hung on and then let go just before it got too high to jump.

We didn't stay for the award ceremony since it was on the Canadian After dinner it was still raining so we took the people mover (monorail) back to Renaissance Center where we parked. Those towers are so confusing. They're round so it's really easy to get turned around. But we eventually found our way out and over to the parking garage.

Great photos of the show & a couple videos to capture some action. Hope we get to see more to life in Michigan. I like Blogs where people share a bit of their own back yard here and it doesn't always have to be something far away or exotic to be interesting.
