Bintan is an island of Indonesia that's about less than an hour away by ferry from Singapore (about 60SGD two way per person) and therefore is a popular destination for Singapore residents and tourists for a quick getaway to relax in their beach resorts or play golf or cycle. So it's no wonder that Bintan is like an extension of Singapore because the currency used there is Singapore dollars and in Singapore rates too! But since my husband and I were looking for a romantic weekend getaway, the obvious choice was of course, Bintan. It would be my hubby's first time in Bintan and second time for myself.

the ferry that would take us from Singapore to Bintan, Indonesia

So on Saturday morning we took the ferry from Tanah Merah ferry terminal of Singapore. Everything was already pre-booked by my hubby (via http://www.bintan-resorts.com/brcms/). After clearing the immigration at Bintan terminal, there were personnel from different hotels waiting at the arrival area. We were directed by the Nirwana group of hotels personnel to our shuttle bus which would take us to our hotel, Mayang Sari.

So the shuttle first brought the guests staying at Nirwana Hotel, then to Nirwana Beach club and then finally to Mayang Sari, our hotel.

Welcome to Bintan, Indonesia
I was kind of disappointed when we arrived at our hotel because it didn't have the same grand welcome like in Nirwana Hotel where they welcomed the guests with a group of locals performing Indonesian dances for arriving guests. On the other hand, in Mayang Sari, it was so quiet, like a ghosttown, and the reception was under renovation so there was just a makeshift reception/lobby. So note to self, next time, book Nirwana Hotel.

In our hotel, there wasn't very much a lot to do but just to enjoy the beach and the company of your travbuddy (in my case, my travhubby :). The beach in Bintan is not really for swimming because I think the waves are too big and the breeze is too strong. It is a good place to just relax and do nothing, or maybe do some writing and reading or watch TV. I wished I did bring my laptop because our resort had wireless internet and our quiet resort, beach view cottage and the sound of the waves were a writer's perfect ambiance.

But well, of course, I shouldn't forget that I was there for some quality relaxing time with my hubby.

So we spent most of day of Saturday just in our room relaxing and watching TV. For dinner, we decided to explore some places to eat because the food in our hotel's restaurant is kind of pricey and the ambiance wasn't that good (the restaurant was under renovation too!). We found the restaurant, La Luna, a few meters' walk away from our hotel. Now that's a relaxing area to have dinner, good ambiance and food. They have a live band performance at around 11pm but we were there too early and were too tired to stay up late. So we retired early that night.

The following day, we just enjoyed the sun, the hammock and a walk on the beach.

our cottage
We found these interesting white shells with a star on them. It's amazing to think how it was formed naturally, it looked like they were drawn with ink. My hubby said he wanted to go for a swim but then backed out after being in the water for a few minutes because of these little white translucent tube shaped creatures. We think those are jellyfishes. They were all over the beach shores like little plastics.

Since our ferry back to Singapore is still in the evening, we had a lot more time to spare. So after checking out of our hotel around noon, we decided to go for a spa and have lunch at Pasar Oleh Oleh. It's a shopping area in Bintan where there's little shops and spas. The spas and restaurants there give free shuttle service that will pick you up from your hotel with a minimum guarantee of about 60 SGD spending. Otherwise, each person pays 5 SGD for the shuttle (this is a rip off!).

So hubby got a two hour stone massage while I got a foot reflexology, a body scrub and a pedi. We also had a yummy late lunch in the restaurant across our spa, hubby finally satisfied his craving for oxtail soup. We also managed to find a hand made photoframe souvenir made of native dried leaves to add to our collection of our holiday photoframes.

After about an hour delay on the ferry departure, we were finally on our way back to Singapore at 9pm. Lesson learned here is to book a taxi in advance for a pick up at Tanah Merah Ferry terminal if you're going for the last ferry trip or spend an hour waiting for a taxi or trying to book one (taxis don't usually want to go to Tanah Merah ferry terminal because it is quite secluded). Or you can take the service bus that goes to Tanah Merah MRT station (we saw it after we finally got a taxi after almost an hour!).

Anyhow, it was a nice weekend all in all. Thanks to my hubby who arranged everything in this trip for us.
