Monks in the early morning

The bus passed through Lao countryside, beautiful scenaries of paddy fields, stream, hills. I realized its nearing Vang Vien when the beautiful range of limestone hills were on my left. The bus brough us into a long empty airfield and sneaked into one of the busy road and the driver parked the bus.Off we dropped and picked our luggages.I looked left and right, this cannot be it ! I further walked along the road and began to uncover the town is totally a tourist town. The main road is littered with guesthouses, bars, internets and filled with 20's American Gapyearers getting pissed. Bars after bars, restaurant after restaurant I passed through and they were all screening popular American sitcom 'Friends'.

It does make sense why the town is over flooded with bars showing 'Friends' because the majority of visitors are young American student.
Calm and peaceful place
I watch 'Friends' every time it’s on the telly but not on my holiday. The town is an outback party mayhem that I wasn't aware off at this part of the region. It is kind of beyond the radar unlike Phuket or Bali or Bangkok. With a combination of cheap Lao beer and the tubing, Vang Vien is definitely a young destination to get pissed up. I’m young myself but never wants to be silly that way LOL. Carrying buckets over buckets to annoy other people on the street. At the hostel I was staying, after midnight when some guest anti-socialising ( infront of their netbook in common room that is), I was taken aback by this drunk kid started to chat with the said guest. The other guests were staring at the scene too. After a second he passed out.
The tubing itself is kind of activity I didn't have interest in doing.

Probably because I was in Phi Phi Island and completely stunned by its utter beauty, any other place not up to the par.

There seems to be empty road and fewer passerbies in the morning. Probably the teenagers were hungover from the night before. I wandered around for some ‘people watching’ seeing monks in the temples and had lunch somewhere in Indian restaurant. There were 2 European travelers sitting infront and one of them was rolling up a cigarette that a clueless passerby interrupted in and asked him where he could get marijuana. Later I rented a bike and after 2 hours I abandoned it, back to guest house and dozed up.

It's ashamed really, the town if it can be called (a village suits best) on a beautiful unspoilt setting but filled with young students for a chance to get pissed up on exotic foreign land. It’s getting to much hype because of this I think - Outback mayhem. If it’s my country I would feel violated and as an insult to local custom as there's no sense of respect among visitor when they are in foreign soil. I want to know what the monks and the local think about this.Vang Vien totally didn't live up to my expectation. I couldn't wait to leave.

I think it will make me sad how such a beautiful place had been 'invaded' so dramatically :-(

The place that I don't like not necesarily bad for other people too. You might want to check it out though. Although nearly half of the blog here are saying the same thing I said.
