The van driven by his brother and him seating next to, was sleeping. I was sleeping too all the way for nearly an hour journey. A stop at homestay in Cemoro Lawang to pick-up another 5 passengers who’s in their package tour overnight at the homestay-Bromo-onward journey. At 3.30am we were loaded into yellow 4 wheel drive, 2 French boys, an English girl, a South Korean boy and a European retiree. We were drove in steep winding road, through mud and a vast desert before climbing up at Gunung Penanjakan viewpoint. The best point of the whole scene. Reaching the viewpoint terrace after climbing up steps, it was cold and cloudy night. I waited for 30 minute and saw a glimpse of sunlight breaking through a cloudy atmosphere, thought that this was going to be a dull sunrise.
The cloud moves fast and later it back to where it used to.
I headed down after the sun has finally comes out for further drive back down to reach Bromo. There we stopped at the vast desert of Laoitan Pasir surrounded by eerie volcanic mountains; we were passing through here on the way up but didn’t see anything beside the dark of the night. A parking space for 4x4 trucks at the getaway hiking up to Bromo. The touts for a horseback ride up to the base of steps to Bromo persuading tourists to ride.
Finally I reached the lips of the crater with the smokes coming out from the center. It was a scene like in any fantasy movie. Looking far down behind was the whole vast of desert and a temple at the center. I would say Sunrise in Bromo and the Crater is by far the most breathtaking vista I’ve seen.
The temperature was less cold as we finished and headed back down to Cemoro Lawang Homestay. Had a chat with Lorna, an English girl in the 4x4 trip, she did the tour that includes a tourist bus from Yogyakarta - Overnight in Bromo- Sunrise in Bromo- and onward bus to Bali for only 450,000 Rupiah!! Where else I paid 350,000 only for only a Sunrise Bromo and stayed somewhere only 35km from Bromo, not some regional city far away! The tour operator in Probolinggo has a very serious problem, Lonely Planet warns me about this but I couldn’t do anything. The irony of travelling in tour package that is cheaper than on one’s own, one of the reason the group of travelers I chatted doing so than doing it independently like myself, and I’ve enjoyed a lot more by doing everything on my own.
To get back to Probolinggo we were swapped back into minivan. I asked the driver to drop me at the bus terminal and be there by local bus, he dropped the price for only 25,000 from 35,000 and 50,000(the first stake). And in total I paid 375,000 Rupiah for Sunrise experience. Money isn’t everything; I made my piece with it and had a memorable moment in Mount Bromo.
I doze up all the way back to my hotel.
