Demak was very significance in Indonesian Archipelago.It is the springboard of which Islam made its leap into Java. Once the capital of Islandâ€™s first Islamic state, it was from here the Hindu Majapahit was conquered and much of Javaâ€™s interior was converted. Demakâ€™s Mesjid Agung (Grand Mosque of Demak) remains one of the Archipelagoâ€™s foremost Muslim pilgrimage sites. And it is the region most Muslim family sends their kids to learn Islam in sort of traditional boarding school called Pesantren.
Masjid Agung, the oldest mosque in Java built in mid 15th century by Wali Songo. Legend tells how it was built from wood by Wali Songo (Nine Saint) in a single night. Four giant main pillars in the main praying area was built by four original Muslim saint and one is said to be made of scraps of timber magically fused together.
