Shining ultra-modern skyscappers
This Jakarta to Lombok via Bali is going to be my last piece of backpacking. It’s been nearly a year since the last time I was infront of an office desk. It’s been a time of my life travelling through the famous, seedy, off-beaten-track,tourist trap, underated and overrated places for months. I’m forgetting how’s working 9-5 feels these days.

From Johor the southern state of Malaysia, I spent a night in Singapore to catch a flight to Jakarta. A bit lucky having my mate working in Singapore, I stayed at his place avoiding for a hostel as Singapore’s hostel is no cheaper for Asian standard in-fact it’s as same as in Europe.
Bajaj- Indonesian tuk-tuk
We checked out what Singapore noted as not to be missed club - Singapore Zouk and overall I was delighted on what it has for $25 entrance fee- 3 rooms with the biggest one for in-house dj gig, it was techno night. The next day a lunch treat with local buddies in Beach road, Arab Street which later we had a quick stroll along Malay Heritage Village of Kampung Glam.

By Tiger Airways to Jakarta the seats were half seated, got a window seat for RM 130 ( Eur30) the journey took about an hour and 15 min. Arriving Soekarno-Hatta Airport by Damri Bus to Gambir bus station the by Bajaj(Indonesian tuk-tuk) to Jalan Jaksa. Jalan Jaksa is traveller’s ghetto for grungy looking budget place. I was pretty stunt to know the mid-range to top-end hotel in Jakarta isn’t cheap. The rundown, nothing fancy and ultra-basic room’s works well to me, I stayed at Bloem Steen Hostel for 130000 Rp(Eur10).
The sleek tower that catches the sight
This isn’t cheap! Apparently the owner only has rooms with air-cond available whereas the fan one only 80000 Rupiah. I took a peek at other hostel nearby but they were either fully booked or expensive. Ok one night for the price is fair enough, the next day I sneaked into the next door Kresna Hostel and thank God, it has room for 70000 Rp(Eur 4.5).

My first day In Jakarta I strolled along Jalan Thamrin where the modern office buildings are. I had dinner in FX Plaza with Yanti and Simsim. They were 2 Indonesian buddies I had a great chat with. Yanti passed me her School project poster she used some of my travel pictures, very thoughtful of her. And Simsim simply fun to hang-out with. Leaving FX, Simsim dared me to take Ojek " the motorbike taxi, I’m all for it but none available at the time.

So we hailed a taxi but 2 stopped, obviously there were 2 of us. Right after I got into the taxi, the driver shouted at the other one and the other one banged his door in return LOL !. Taxis fighting for passengers. But all is good, Simsim got into the other one and I’m safe back to Jalan Jaksa.

Indonesian Metro with a twist is a good way for ‘people watch’. Instead of modern train the carrier is buses on designated lane in chokingly busy Jakarta Street. There are stations every 250m, similar concept and technical aspect of any other Metro in the world, with ticket counter and turn-table gate. Last night I took a ride from Sarinah station to Senayan. Today I went to Kota, the Old Part of Jakarta, wandered around Taman Fatahillah(Fatahillah Square) which houses 3 of cities most interesting museum : Jakarta History Museum,Puppet Museum and Fine Art & Ceramic Museum.

Wow, you have written it already? ;-)

Reminding suggested route for your trip: Jakarta - Bogor - Bandung - Yogyakarta (take a base here, you can go to Solo, Prambanan, Borobudur, and Dieng Plateau) - Semarang - Demak (I heard you want to go here) - Surabaya - Malang - Bromo - Ijen - Bali - Lombok. If you want, you can go to Flores and Komodo.
