Arriving at the Monarch Hotel, we have a message at the reception: our best friends have had a baby! (Ooty, Southern India)

When the Toy Train arrives in Ooty, Ajit is there to take us for the last couple of miles to our hotel. It’s the Monarch Hotel and the huge building and spacious reception area looks very stylish.

I’m taking a spot on one of the couches in the reception area to smoke a cigarette, while Rens takes care of the checking-in procedure. I’ve only taken a few drags when I hear him yelling at me. ‘It’s a boy! It’s a boy!’ He screams while looking at me in ecstasy. For a moment I have no idea what he is talking about, but then it starts to dawn. Our best friends were expecting a baby and although they weren’t due until we got back, there was still a slight chance the baby would come while we were travelling through India.

Calling our friends to congratulate them on their new born son (Ooty, Southern India)
We had given them the names and addresses of the hotels we would stay in, just in case.

And obviously, the baby had come a bit sooner. Rens shows me a note on which every possible name is misspelled, but who cares. I think they are brilliant for even understanding our complicated Dutch names through the phone and connecting the message to us, while over a dozen other Dutch people with equally impossible names were checking in at the same time.

We run to our room and call home, to hear from the new parents. As soon as we lay down the phone, we feel the urgent need to celebrate. We have dinner in the hotel restaurant and run into travel companions who had the same idea. We start asking the hotel staff whether there is a bar or something, and we find out there’s a disco in the basement.

They open it just for us, and let us into a weird looking cave that starts with a bar that has horse saddles for bar stools. Behind that, there is a dance area, with room for a disc jockey that seems to be decorated with aluminum foil. The paint on the walls has seen better days and the waiter who starts putting cd’s in the player has an awful pick (90’s euro trash), but who cares? The music is ear splitting loud and it is impossible to exchange any sort of conversation, but it doesn’t matter. The new baby on the other side of the world is welcomed in style!
