On our second morning in Bruges we headed to a bike rental shop near Markt Square we had discovered during our wanderings the night before and rented two bikes for the day. After quite an adventure navigating through town to the tourist information booth (and getting honked at quite a few times), we had a map and a plan to ride out to Damme, a small town about 45 minutes from Bruges.

On route, we decided to ride through Het Minnewater (Love Lake), a beautiful park near the entrance to Bruges that is inhabited by a number of swans. After a lovely ride through the park, we found our way to the outskirts of the town and onto the correct path to Damme. Unfortunately, about five minutes into the ride I had a bug fly into my eye which was horrible and resulted in it watering and hurting for the rest of the day but we decided to continue on our way regardless with the new knowledge that sunglasses should be worn when bike riding.

Riding to Damme
The path follows alongside a canal on one side and fields on the other so it was a really peaceful, quiet ride. When we arrived in Damme we were so surprised by how quiet and empty it appeared to be, there was virtually no one around! We found a nice spot on a bench along a trail just past the town and settled in for a picnic lunch with the cows before returning to Bruges.

In the evening, we went out for some mussels, french fries and beer and then headed to a chocolate shop because we weren't going to leave Bruges without trying some of the chocolate (note: it's as good as they say it is). That night, we wandered along the canals again before returning to our room to prepare for our departure the following day.
