Darwin... small town, but it knows how to party! Just a drive down the main street any time after midday and the sidewalk bars are buzzing! The tropical heat brings the town alive with bars spilling out onto the main street, and everyone having a general good time.
Off to Kakadu... crocodile country! This place is beautiful. Too many people go unprepared or are not agile enough and cannot access the best places in Kakadu National Park. There are stunning outcrops, and beautiful swimming pools at the top and bottom of waterfalls. You must have a suitable 4wd that can cross a croc infested creek and be able to climb over boulders to access the beautiful jim jim falls. It's all worth it in the end.
Approx 200km south of Kakadu to the beautiful Katherine Gorge - a continuation of not one, but 13 different gorges! There's a great little cafe at the top with gorgeous views. Don't forget Edith falls approx 30k north of Katherine - it's one of the best! You must climb to the top of Edith to truly be rewarded with a natural pool that looks like it came from a top resort hotel.
Back towards Darwin and a couple of nights at Litchfield. Litchfield is much more accessable that Kakadu, with tourist paths to each of the falls and good parking and camping facilities. Though its easy access means there's alot more people!!
Back to Darwin and the Mindil beach markets which are open each Thursday & Sunday from April to October. This is the place that everyone goes to watch the glorious tropical sunset, and with so many wares and exotic food to check out, you'll be staying up way past sunset.
