The "home-stay" provides 3 meals except Sunday.Since it was Sunday, I hang out with friends who know local spots.
Antigua is the best preserved beautiful colonial town in Central America that designated as UNESCO world heritage site in 1979. It is located an altitude of 1,500 meters overlooked by the dormant Volcano Agua(3765m) and smoking Volcano Fuego(3763m). The roads are cobblestone and buildings are well preserved colonial spanish style that make you feel as if you trip to 16th century.
After Spanish settlment in 1524, the town flourished with establishment of churches, hospitals, schools by Maya labourers and population rose to 50k. Unfortunate massive earthquick in 1773 brought all of this to an abrupt end.... (bottom photos shows the ruin of the church which destroyed by this earthquick). Although the capital was moved after this devastation, many of conservative middle class stay in Antigua and Guatematicos come to Antigua on weekends. This charming town continue to attract tourist from all over the world to make it as cosmopolitan lively place but still keeping ancient atmosphere. Wanna move here ? well, if you can afford skyrocketing land prices..
