Empire State Building

Followed the signs out of the station to the subway. First sight was the Post Office building on 8th Avenue. Turned to look along the street and there was the Empire State Building towering above .Something special when you see such an iconic building for the first time. Headed into the subway and bought myself an unlimted 7 day metro card for $27 and took the train up to 59th Street to change for line C and 72nd Street/Central Park. Came out the station there and straight across the road was the Dakota Building, scene of John Lennon's murder.

Cut back one street to where my hotel, the Comfort Inn, was on West 71  St, and checked in fairly quickly and they were OK with me doing it at 1pm. Given a room on the 10th floor, and while it wasn't up to much was adequate enough for me.

Went out to check the surrounding area, looking for a supermarket, and managed to find on nearby and stocked up with a few beers, snacks for the room and fresh milk for my tea. Headed back to leave them there and then set off to execute the rest of that days plan.

After a long day travelling, I intended to take it easy this day and let the five hour time difference catch up with me. Had been told of a pub that screened Scottish football, and headed for The Blue Room, to watch my own team play. Made a bit of a mess getting the wrong station and ended up coming out at 59th St/5th Ave at the corner of Central Park. Totallly distracted and started heading off in the opposite direction I should have been going as I kept seeing things down 5th Ave.

Me In MSG
Realising the game was due to start I got myself together, decided I would come back to here and was in the pub to see the game at 2-45. Sat and had a few beers and a bite to eat while watching the game, which we won 2-0 :), and was ready to go at 5pm and make my to Madison Square Gardens.

Had booked ticket on internet to go and see the New York Rangers, this was the only time they were at home while I would be here. Had to go to the 'Will Call' ticket pick up area, with my passport, to get my ticket,as they won't post them out to international adresses, no matter how far in advance you book them. Went up and had a mosey round the shop and then grabbed a beer and went up and found my seat. Felt great to be in such a famous sporting arena, and took it all in as I watched the warm up.

Michael and Jimbo,(and my 'old' top :D)

Had never been to an ice hockey game before, so wasn't sure how I would react to it. Two guys came up and took the seats next to me and I got started talking to them. Jimbo and Michael were great, all through the game, and explained everything to me and I was surprised just how much I got into it, as  Michael had played soccer at college and understood the comparisons I was trying to make. Was really caught up in it as the New York Rangers were out muscled ( we had seats right in front of the TV gantry, so if you were watching the MSG Network and heard some Scottish voice swearing at them, that was me ;-) ) . Great being able to grab a refill beer during the breaks, something you can't do at a football game in Scotland, and despite Rangers losing 5-1, to the North Carolina Hurricanes, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Like I said the guys were most welcoming, at one point I kind of apologised for my accent to which Jimbo replied ' This is New york, everyone has an accent', and I felt right at home. I had been wearing my own Rangers top and at the end Michael and I swapped tops 8). Cheers for a great night Jimbo and Michael.

Time to head back up to the hotel and went back and grabbed a beer in the room before calling it a night as the time difference caught up with me, as it was now the equilelant of 3-30am for me now.
