Fireflies

Bukit Melawati Lighthouse

The town of Kuala Selangor is really unimpressive from a modern/urban perspective...and this is coming from someone who finds enjoyment in even the simplest of things. There are very few colonial leftovers and even less of anything before that period. Bukit Melawati is about the only place to go during the day, though there is a nature reserve in the area if bird-watching interests you. Fresh seafood dinners are also commonplace when visiting Kuala Selangor. However, the main attraction, reportedly the largest concentration of fireflies in the world, is definitely worth the visit. You float down the river in the pitch black of the night on a boat that uses a humming battery-operated engine. Yes, both eco-friendly and quiet so as not to spoil the still of the night. As you get close to the mangrove trees along the banks, you see the trees start to light up with millions of fireflies. It is truly like a fairy tale and so very Zen.

Oh, no...don't pay that much! It is beautiful, but difficult and inconvenient to get to for tourists (or locals without a car--like me). Plus, the main attraction is after dark so an overnight there is usual.

I assume that living in KL you did NOT take the $250 - 4 hour tour I saw advertised? Place sounded beautiful but a little too expensive for my pocketbook. :)
