Around 830 kilometres (520 miles), about 22 hours on the road, hopping busses in Riga. This was by far the longest bus ride I’ve ever took but when I finally arrived I was surprised that I handled the whole trip quite well.

Word of advice when travelling by bus long distances: take a travelling pillow - you might want to feel your neck when arriving at the destination; take something to read • it makes time passing easier. I took The Life and Travels of Christopher Columbus by Washington Irving, around 700 pages just to make sure I wouldn’t get bored.

So I arrived in Tallinn and the bus station was a bit far from the city centre.

Raekoja plats
Some guy from the bus station offered to exchange me some Euros into Kroonas at a ridiculous rate, at which of course I passed. Got a tram to the city centre and checked into Viru Hostel on one of the main streets in the old town. Very quiet place, not a party hostel but after such a long ride I wasn’t in the mood for any of that. The Irish girl who was workin’ at the reception said that if I want more action I should check in another hostel they have, where the atmosphere lively and they do parties, pub crawls and stuff like that. But after all that travelling I thought I would need at least a good night sleep so I stayed at Viru.

Tallinn is a very beautiful city, and wherever the steps carry you around the old town you’ll find a great cultural heritage, amazing architecture, wee cobbled streets with small cafes and you’ll feel like you journeyed in time. I recommend exploring the old town by foot with a map and discovering for yourselves all the little wonders the Estonian capital has to offer.

As for places to grab a drink and something to eat I strongly recommend Hell Hunt, a cool pub/restaurant that brew their own beer and cider and serve great selection of dishes.

Also I checked on Molly Malone, an Irish pub right near the main square owned by an Irish fellow with great parties and atmosphere.

Tip: You have to try the Baltic Cider and also the large variety of rye bread. And also have tons of fish. I especially enjoyed the smoked ones. And there is plenty of jerky as well.

The new town is minutes away from the Old Town, so if you’ll need a bank transaction, like I did; it’s not really a big hassle. Also there are plenty of shopping goin on and you wont have trouble finding souvenirs, they’re practically everywhere. So the voices in my head were quite pleased after I got a Tallinn fridge mag.

Another great thing in Tallinn: if you want to book something, anything, plane tickets, bus rides, ferry cruises, there is an office in the old town’s square called Booking Estonia and they will practically do it for you for FREE, no commission. The only thing is they will only accept cash so no credit cards. Basically I booked all of the rest of my tickets for the rest of my travels there, so if you are lazy like me and don’t want to do it your self on the net just look for Booking Estonia.

David, the Baltics are great and worth visiting. For example if you are coming from western Europe, you can just go from, lets say, Germany and travel to the north of Poland, around Gdansk and go till Tallinn or Helsinki from there; and then come back south till Krakow and Budapest.
Cheers!
