Exploring the city

As we didn't have long we planned the day to fit in as much as possible.  We started by walking to the nearby gardens and taking some photos before hopping on the metro to the Eiffel Tower.  There were accordian players on the metro doing Christmas songs which made me feel really festive.  At the Eifel Tower, the queue to go up was huge and outside.  Deciding that we would die of frostbite before we made it to the entrance we moved on across the river to get a better view of the tower and then along to the Arc de Triumphe (excuse my spelling!).  It really was so cold you couldn't be out in it too long even if moving around so we ducked into a cafe for a coffee and a pastry.

Next we walked the whole length of the Champs Ellyses - the bottom end had a huge Christmas market going on with loads of stalls.

One stall was smoking salmon in a big wood fire - there was a crowd around that one, stealing the warmth!

We decided to be fit and walk back to the hotel which turned out to be further than we thought and we were practically dead by the time we got back mid afternoon.  After a shower and a quick glass of campaigne in the hotel bar we headed over to Orian's for the evening.  We had decided that we couldn't afford to drink in Parisian bars so went to the local corner shop to buy some cans and drank at Orian's instead.

We did head out to a nearby bar a bit later - it was really grotty and the bathroom was like something out of a horror film (I can hack it though - i've been to Thailand!)
