If you like meeting new people, trying your hand at making chili, drinking a few with new acquaintances, then the Bandera Chili Cookoff is the place you should be heading to!! It is the neatest town, with the friendliest people. It's called the "Cowboy Capital of Texas" and that's no joke. You're likely to see a "cowboy" riding down mainstreet on his horse, heading for his favorite watering hole. If you just like to meander down "city" streets and have a cool drink in a unique place, Bandera is "right up your alley". Check out the Silver Dollar Saloon; it's just a door off the main street, but once you get down the stairs to the bar, you'll experience a very neat place. Arky Blue "country singer" owns the place and can been seen there from time to time. My husband and I had the pleasure of sitting in on one of his visits and listening to him play and sing with a couple of local players. And you can't go to Bandera without going to the 11th Street Bar, the Biggest Little Bar in Texas. It is so neat! There is another little bar, can't remember the name of it, but you can't miss it. It has a big deck that is right beside the main road (Highway 16) and you can watch all the people go by and sit and relax. All the people in Bandera are very friendly and it is so pretty down there. Bandera has 2 chili cookoff's, the first is on Valentine's Weekend and the other is some time in October(tba). Hope to see you there sometime! There are campgrounds and hotels to stay in in Bandera, we always stay at a campground. We like the Pioneer RV Resort. It is a very nice place to stay and a 1/2 block walk to downtown Bandera. A good place for breakfast (or any meal) is the OST (Old Spanish Trail). Very good food and reasonably priced, too. Check out this unique little town if you ever get the chance; you won't be disappointed!
