North Essex

Today, I took Iain to North Essex to see the pretty parts of the county.

Essex has a bad reputation for being ugly, industrial, and entirely populated by mini skirt wearing stupid women, and white van driving racist men. This is not true at all. There is a narrow, ugly belt of industry along the Thames estuary and, in fairness, quite a high ratio of white vans to head of population. But the rest of the stereotype is just not true. And north Essex is Constable country, full of lovely villages and rolling hillsides.

"Full" is of course the word that struck Iain. Having grown up in Yorkshire and Scotland, he is used to there being quite a lot of space between villages. North Essex is still, fundamentally, South England, and the population density is high. You're never more than twenty minutes drive from a traffic jam, and this puzzles Iain enormously. That said, there is no getting round the fact that Finchingfield is lovely, and so it was the first proper stop.

Finchingfield is just south of where Constable painted, and has a windmill and some charming cottages, a wide village green, some slightly psychotic geese and a nice pub or two. Picture perfect England.

After that, we went to Dedham for a walk. We arrived slightly too late to go to Flatford Mill, which still looks exactly like it did when Constable was painted, but we went for a walk along the river Stour in the sunset. It was a beautiful evening.
