Going on a Spring Break cruise is
every college kid’s rite of passage. After a week full of all-nighters spent studying for seemingly
impossible midterm exams, students need a break to lay on the beach all day
with a pina colada in one hand and a margarita in the other. This is exactly what I did with 20 of my
sorority sisters during my senior year of college. We found a $350 Royal Caribbean: Majesty of
the Seas Cruise that was departing out of Miami. We all lived in Tallahassee,
FL at the time which is about an eight hour
drive to Miami.
drinking out of pineapples on the ship!
Luckily, a few of my sorority sisters were
from Miami so we all carpooled and
stayed at their houses the night before our ship departed.
Most of the girls that I was with
had been on cruises before, but for me it was my first time.Needless to say, I couldn’t sleep the night
before because I was overcome with excitement. My friend’s mom dropped us off at the port the next morning and we met up
with the rest of the group and boarded the ship.It was such a beautiful sight.I couldn’t believe how huge the ship
was!We checked in our luggage and
immediately went to the top deck to grab a frozen drink and lay in the sun with
our bikinis to get a tan!It was the
first time in a long time that we had been stress free.
It wasn’t too long before we heard
the ship’s horn beep as it disembarked toward the open ocean! That first day all we did was lay around on
the top deck and drink until the sun went down.
a few of us at dinner!
Our rooms were very small.There
was a tiny bathroom that I shared with 3 other sorority sisters. There were two beds on the ground and above
each of them was a pull out bed.Unfortunately I was stuck on one of the top beds! Oh well! The only thing
we really did in our room was sleep. The
rest of the ship was pretty amazing. It
was fully equipped with a large pool(which boasted a belly flop contest as well
as a dance party), a gym (if I wasn’t going to use the gym at school, I
certainly wasn’t going to use one while on vacation!), a rock climbing wall, a
casino, a food court, a restaurant, a club, and other fun stuff.Almost everyone on the cruise was a student
between the ages 18 and 22 so that meant the ship was going crazy at all
times.I felt sorry for the one or two
families that had the misfortune of being on the cruise. After the parents saw all of our drunken
antics, I bet they’ll think twice before letting their college students go on a
spring break cruise!
The ship planned all sorts of
activities for us.
Meredith, Christy, me, and Katie at the formal dinner!
There was a three
course dinner with a menu that changed each night. Our sorority had requested tables next to
each other so we got to all be in the same vicinity. That made dinner a lot more fun, although we
did have a little problem during our first night. My table had two strangers that were assigned
to it and I guess they thought we were a little too drunk or maybe too immature
because the next night we had two different girls.Apparently the first couple had complained
and demanded a different table. Whoops! We didn’t have any problems after that so it all worked out.Our waiter loved us and the feeling was
mutual. He waited on us every night and
he would do these really cool tricks with wine bottles.
A formal dinner was held on one of
the nights and we all agreed to meet early so we could get a picture of all of us
on the beautiful stairwell. We were all
dressed up and after about 15 minutes of picture taking, we went in to
Me covered in lipstick for the game at the club!
It wasn’t until after all these
pictures were taken that we realized we were missing someone, Carly.Carly had met a boy named Greg on the cruise
(randomly enough I actually knew him.We
went to high school together. It’s a
small world) and had spent every moment with him.She was with him when we were taking the
pictures. If you knew Carly, then you
would know it was a huge mistake to leave her out of the photo. She came to dinner and whined the entire time
about how she was the only one not in the picture. To this day she won’t let us forget it.One of my sorority sisters got so tired of
all her complaints that she actually photoshopped her face into the picture!
After several drinks at the formal
dinner, my friend Christy (who you will hear tons about once I get to daytrip
escapades) and I decided to have a little fun. There were professional photographers spread all throughout the ship.
posing behind the Titanic backdrop!
They had these elaborate backdrops of scenes
from the movie Titanic as well as corny prom night backdrops like grand pianos!
Of course me and Christy just had to take a picture in front of all of
these. They were just too corny to pass
up.This was definitely one of those
‘you had to be there’ moments. We tried
to do the funniest poses because who can honestly take this stuff
seriously?Everyone was laughing at us
as we ran from backdrop to backdrop. One
of the photographers actually got mad at us.He wouldn’t take the picture unless we posed seriously.
All the pictures were posted all
around the main floor a couple days later.I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so hard in my entire life.Christy and I found all of the pictures that were
taken of us and we wanted to buy all of them but they were way too
expensive.We even thought briefly about
stealing them but we are actually good people and we were a little scared that
we might get caughtJ.
doing the Titanic pose on the ship!
on it now, I really wish that I had gone ahead and bought them all.One of the backdrops had a scene of the elaborate
dining room staircase from Titanic and we pretended like we were falling down
the stairs while water was gushing towards us.If I had that photo, it would be proudly displayed in my living room
right now.Oh how I miss Christy(she
currently lives in California
while I’m still in Florida). We also went around and looked at the photos
of other people who took the photo sessions seriously.Believe me when I say that those were almost
as funny as ours!
The cruise also offered many
nighttime activities.There was a comedy
show that we all attended. We took up
the first row which made it more exciting because the comedian messed with us
and then he announced that our sorority was in the house! We loved that shout
After the show, we went up to the
club which hosted a game for everyone to play. This wasn’t just any game.It was
definitely R rated and kinda dangerous(I was literally trampled on the ground). We all formed into teams and were given a
number. The emcee would ask for some
random item and we would have a minute or so to find it and then show it to
him. Some of the items included a thong,
a pair of boxers, a pierced body part, and many more things too inappropriate
to share on a website. At one point in
the night, the guys actually had to dress up in high heels and women’s
clothes! It was quite a site to behold!
Christy and I were famished after
the game so we went to the dining hall for some free pizza(which was a big deal
for me because this was my vegan phase and I hadn’t eaten any meat or dairy in
about 6 months).We ran around a little
more after that so we could pretend that we were Kate and Leo in Titanic.
All of us hanging out at the club!
I’m surprised that we never fell overboard
while attempting to stand at the railing at the bow of the ship. I must also mention this was the same year
that T-Pain’s ‘I’m On A Boat’ came out so of course one of our goals was to sing
it at least 100 times. We may have met
that goal more than once! Those moments
on the ship were definitely some of the highlights of my life.I’ll never forget them or the people that I
