The Old Tucson Court House at the Presidio.

I have been meaning to write an independent blog on Tucson, but due to the many other obligations and work, I put it aside each time it came to mind. Things got in the way and one more . . . I have always disliked it when people told me they did not know much about their home town or neighborhood, I thought it would be a shame if I do not know my own town. Don't get me wrong, I have almost covered the whole State of Arizona, yet Tucson remained untouched for the most part. This weekend however, I changed that: Desire decided she wanted to go see the snow up Mount Lemmon, but due to closure of the mountain we were only able to see the snowcapped mountain top from Speedway and Tanque Verde.

World War II Memorial: Triumph of Courage
I decided to take her down town Tucson instead to see the city center as never before. She had so much fun feeding the pigeons with a lady who turned out to be stranded here in Tucson . . . The sun was out, but the chill was constant, in the shade it felt like 40 degrees while in the sun it felt like 60. We tried as much as possible to stay in the sun to avoid getting too cold. Desire seemed to do much better than I did, in fact she got hot and took her jacket off entirely while I struggled to stay warm . . .

Tucson is approximately 2,400 feet above sea level and 60 miles north of the Mexico border, about 150 miles south of the capital city, Phoenix- and about 500 miles east of Los Angeles and the ocean). Tucson is one of the last of the wild frontiers, being the oldest inhabited city in North America (inhabited first by the Hohokam Indians around 100AD).

The valley is home to more than a million people who dwell in this Southwestern U.S. desert environment. I relocated to Tucson two years ago from a small town called Sonoita; in comparison, Tucson is larger by far. Tucson is one of the larger metropolitan cities in the United States. It is the site of University of Arizona “home of the Wildcats" and is the largest city in southern Arizona. Major suburbs of Tucson include Oro Valley, Marana , and Sahuarita south of the city. Communities in the vicinity of Tucson including within and or overlapping the city limits include Casas Adobes, Catalina foothills, Flowing Wells, Catalina, Tanque Verde, Green Valley and Vail. Tucson has a population of a little over one million residents as of the end of 2009.

Some of Tucson's main tourist attractions include: Pima Air & Space Museum, Arizona State Museum, Tucson Museum of Art, Biosphere II, Titan Missile Museum, Desert museum, Colossal Cave Mountain Park, Saguaro National Park, Kitt Peak Observatory, Tohono Chul Park, Old Tucson Studios, Tucson Botanical Gardens, University of Arizona museum of art, Hiking Mount Lemmon, Saguaro National Park, Sabino Canyon hikes, Rincon Mountain wilderness, the International Wildlife Museum, Sonora Desert Museum etc.

The weather in Tucson: The sunsets here do not compare to the sunsets I saw growing up in Uganda.(something that I took for granted, well never really cared about until I came to the land of seasons). Tucson reminds me much of my home country because of the hills, mountains and incredible sunrise and sunsets. The heat is another story all together: temperatures run anywhere from 30 degrees in the winter to over 105 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer. Of course our winters can hardly be called winters when compared to the Midwest.

During the course of each year Tucson hosts two of the nation’s most exciting gem, mineral and fossil trade shows attracting crowns from the world over. For two weeks (January through the 15th of February) the Gem show brings in traders from countries like Argentina, China, Morocco, Mexico, Chile, Brazil, Congo to mention but a few.

Interestingly, I, have not seen half of the attraction within my town, I should get active and do so before I decide to relocate and then regret not seeing them. To do so of course I would need to limit some of my out of state and out of country travels. O' I must mention - Tucson has some breathtaking sunrises and sunsets, nothing compares . . .! If I was not lazy I would rise early enough to take the sunrise and wait long enough in the evening to see the sun set. The few photos I have taken of the sunset have all been in passing through the windshield of my car. I have made an extra effort to get out of my car on occasion to take some of the photos, or turn around while waiting for the street lights to turn green from red.

As we continued touring the city, we met quite a few homeless people especially near the official office buildings of the Tucson governing bodies.

Can you smile and laugh in the face of adversity? Desire and I met this amazing woman on our trip downtown Tucson last week.
One lady in particular piqued my interest; charming and well-spoken she was and was feeding the pigeons as if they all belonged to her. She told me her name was Veronica; she spoke amidst instructing Desire how to have the pigeons eat from her hands, of being stranded in Tucson following an event that left her with no form of identification. She was unable to return back to her home in Kansas because she would not be let on the bus with no photo ID, I took a short video of her telling her story (feel free to click on it above). Welcome to Tucson! You will have an exciting time in the land of the wildcats with Desire and I.

PS: “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines.

Thanks Nate, I should hope it does, it's my home town. I seek to do it justice.
