We were up fairly early to leave, but with all the fart-arsing about and loading etc, it was about 7.30am before we were on the road. We set off with the plan to get to Theni first of all and we travelled with John and Louise ('The Holy Cow Express')for a bit. Quite easy to see them in their cow print machine! We got separated on the awesome Ghat Road, which came out of the hills and down onto the hot plains, taking 17 hair pin bends as we went. Concentration required! We were hungry mid-morning as we hadn't really had breakfast, so we found a local joint in Theni and once again had Masala Dosas. The owners loved us and we spent around ten minutes taking photos with every conceivable relation! We headed onto Dundigul, which was strange place - looked like a bomb had hit as the roads were a total mess, piles of dirt everywhere.
We had to ask for directions a couple of times on leaving Dindigul, but Vicks did a pretty good job negotiating us out of town, despite almost taking a cyclist out at one point! We had thought it was plain sailing heading out towards Trichy, but after about an hour we figured we weren't on the road we thought we were, but actually heading towards Salem - shit! We asked around and found a road which wasn't on our map and got back on the right track to Trichy. I took over as we drove in at dusk as the traffic was absolutely mental. I was in my element with the adrenalin rush of weaving in and out and trying not to get squashed by huge buses! It was impossible to navigate and after driving round for about an hour, we paid a tuk-tuk driver to lead us to our hotel. We stayed at Hotel Mathura (INR 600) and met up with the other teams later on at the Banana Leaf for some nosh. Sounded like they'd had harder days than us and the breaking down has already started....hmmm, more of that to come perhaps??!
