Gold Coast day trip

I landed pretty early into Gold Coast airport, just outside Coolangatta as the time difference basically offset the flight time. I would have preferred to have flown straight onto Kuala Lumpur, but there wouldn't have been enough time to catch the check in for the 9.05am flight, so I accepted that I'd have to have a day on the coast....not too bad really!! I had pre-booked a dorm bed at the Coolangatta Sands Hotel (AU$30), and it turned out to be a fun day. I had forgotten how nice the coasts of Australia are, they really do have some nice long stretches of sand! And much more laidback than the raucous Surfers Paradise up the coast, Coolangatta was a good choice for the day.
I had a stroll round the small town and did a few odds and sods before heading down the beach to relax, which must have been all of 3 minutes walk from the hostel! I had a nice clear day and enjoyed the sun. At the hostel, I had got chatting to an English couple, Matt and Hannah, who were making their way south, and we decided to sign up for the hostel BBQ in the evening. It was only AU$10 (£6) and included some beer, so we thought it sounded like a good plan! Adam, the guy running the hostel, lugged all the supplies the short but steep way up Kirra Hill where they had a public BBQ to use. The view was great, especially when the sunset - awesome colours that the camera doesn't really do justice. With a few cold beers and some great bangers, it was a nice way to finish off the day. Tomorrow, onwards, Asia beckons!
