We got out of Trichy early which meant we avoided the heavy traffic. We took a local backroute, which almost ended in disaster as Vicks nearly put us into a field of sugar cane! We got through and onto NH45, which was a nice smooth two-laner and we chewed up some kilometres. We stopped at at the Indian equivalent of South Mimms services for an omlette breakfast, which of course ended in a photo session with the locals! We met up with Moby Rick, Holy Cow Express and Naztronauts on the highway and had a great morning overtaking each other, taking photos and videos - good fun! We all stopped at Villapuram and had lunch, but our first breakdown soon followed in the afternoon. Luckily the Moby Rick guys pulled up within a few minutes and indicated that they'd had a similar problem - the spark plug cable shorting out and disconnecting.
We found the Moby Rick guys in the town and we all checked into the Blue Elephant Hotel (INR 500 with fan) which was nice, clean and had a cool verandah for a cold beer....or two! Vicks and I quickly checked out the beach before it got dark - we'd gone coast to coast in less than 3 days! Mamallapuram looked like a proper backpacker town with all the usual tourist trappings and hassles. 'Weed, weed' were the constant hushed calls as we walked down the dirt streets. We went out as a group of about 20 to Moonrakers for some food and a few beers....which turned into a bit of a party, ending up with us all on the beach at about 2am drinking rum straight from the bottle....good times!
