Dave enjoying his pint in York:)
Finally after a pretty stressful search for a petrol station (our GPS lied to us - shame on you, Laura!) we were with our tank full and heading to York! Dave just loves that city, and once we started planning this UK trip York was a must destination. We arrived to York, and Dave was shining recognizing familiar places. We easily found hotel, and were happy to finally get some rest. But an act of racism awaited us!
The woman who greeted us was like a Dickens character - pale and sad and obviously not happy with the whole world. We said hello, and it was enough - she heard Dave’s accent and realized he was American. She looked into our booking info and said in an upset voice: “Oh I thought you were… ok, never mind… Oh your last name… here in Yorkshire we have a place called Haworth so I thought you were….mmm…. but you are….mmm”.
She was really not happy with us. It was the first time in my life I saw a British acting like that towards an American. To end the story, she charged double rate for our room and also some extra for the parking lot. Not the best experience ever…
Our hotel in York
We were too tired to have any discussion with this ‘Ms Jealous’ and decided to have a dinner. It was January 1. The streets were empty, and the majority of places closed. Finally we spotted a nice pub - but what a pity! - on January 1 no food servedL The bartender recommended us to go to McDonald’s since everything was closed. A smile touched Dave’s face as he heard the name of the main American crap but we wanted to be strong and rejected that idea. Good luck visited us - and we found a nice Italian restaurant and enjoyed our salads and risotto. It was a good end of this long day - just the first day in 2010J
