Where am I, GPS????

Alright, so Thursday morning arrived and I had to travel from Knoxville to Oak Ridge, the town where the Nuclear Research Center is. As I said, I was pretty intrigued, since the town was established for the Manhattan Project in 1942. There was a stop point a few miles before getting into the ORNL. It reminded me a bit of the USA-Mexico border. I was asked for an ID and they searched me in the invitees list. Then I was given a temporary access pass and a map of the facilities. There I go!

One thing I noticed is that none of the roads could be found by my GPS. I know this is silly, but I felt like driving in the middle of nowhere. Almost like if I was getting to one of those super secret laboratories in Africa hehe. I finally arrived into the building where the conferences would be held.

The Spallation Neutron Source lab, wow!
The conference was ok, not really my area of research, but at least I could see some of the best neutron research instruments in the USA. I could tour around VULCAN, a massive spectrometer for the detailed investigation of the structure of materials, but I wasn't allowed to take any pictures unfortunately. I was told that the SNS (Spalling Neutron Source) of Oak Ridge is the largest and most powerful neutron beam for characterization of materials in the USA. I felt honored to be there.

They served really good food and drinks at the conference. Probably the best of it, at least for me. At 7 PM we called it a day and I returned back to the hotel to rest and sleep since I couldn't do it much the night before.
