Sunday morning, Mortsen (from "Wild Rider" car rentals !) met us at the hotel with our car. He is not an employee, just a friend of the owner's, helping out. It was refreshing to go through the simple paperwork with someone whose paycheck doesn't depend on brow-beating customers into taking out additional insurance. He took a lot of time to offer guidance about travel routes (especially avoiding huge traffic jams near a big party), and sent us on the road with his personal assistant, Maria.

Maria's guidance has been invaluable. Not only does she lead us through confusing city strets and unmarked turns, she also gives us advance warning of road hazards, like "Puenta Angosto Adelante." I don't know the Spanish, but the basic meaning is "slow down -- the bridge ahead is one lane only !"

Our journey from Alajuela (San Jose airport) to Arenal took us through at least 4 climate zones -- many of them more than once.

Jody tells me these pictures show brilliant colors in the trees ...

Our lunch stop was in Zarcero -- a cute town known for topiaries in its town square / park -- fun !

Arrival in La Fortuna late afternoon -- nice eco-lodge in lovely surroundings. Birds flitting about, noisy frogs at night -- sweet dreams ! The volcan is shy, as usual, hiding behind clouds.
