Arenal
Our tour of the rainforest took so long on Monday that when we drove to the Arenal Volcano observatory, they had closed ffor the day (4pm -- earlier than our books suggested). This was a big disappointment after 9 bone-jarring kilometers of pot-hole infested, washboard dirt road ...

But -- when in Arenal, the volcano is the main attraction, so we got going early on Tuesday, went to the observatory, prowled aroud and took a short hike. It is fun to see the volcano close-up --- even though that still means several miles away. With binoculars we could watch the steam rising from steam vents and/or lava streams (cannot tell which from a distance).

Never quite saw the whole mountain clear of clouds, but fairly good views. And -- on our hike an unexpected close-up encounter with a coral snake -- yikes !

The road from Arenal to Monteverde needs more than a chapter to itself. It was a never-ending journey.. When wer thought we were getting close, we started into a 20+ kilometer stretch of awful rutted dirt/gravel road. Average speed under 15mph. Nice scenery, though, and a wonderful treat to be welcomeed by Jonathan and Heather as we arrived (very road-weary) near dusk.
