In July 2008 my wife and I travelled to the Bernese Oberland for a 10 day holiday especially to experience the Furka-Bergestrecke Bahn. On the Saturday we caught the early train from Interlaken to Meiringen. At Meiringen a very short walk brought us to the Bus Staion where a bus awaited, but also a very long queue of people. It seems that on Saturdays in Switzerland the towns go to the country!!! The bus filled and we became very dissappointed! Then another bus turned up and an Official made it known to those of us waiting that this was a Special, layed on because there were so many needy travellers! Would that happen anywhere else except Switzerland???
We climbed aboard for the exciting trip up to the Grimsel Pass where we were able to take a short photo break, amongst all the powerful motorbikes, then down the pass to Gletsch where the little steam train awaited the bus, of course! We had a great day making the return trip to Realp with the superbly restored "Weisshorn" engine pulling us.

A train full of excitement and enjoyment! The Swiss like to 'enjoy' their weekends !!! En route we saw the sad remains of the Rhone Glacier! Where will the 'mighty' Rhine get its water from in the not so distant future?
We finally returned to Gletsch where the bus soon came along for the return trip to Meiringen via the Grimsel, full of very tired but contented passengers, many of whom we had travelled with on the morning bus.
I have to make comment on the Bus company's policy to carry bikes on the rear bike rack! What a brilliant idea that our bus companies should adopt. One group of young cyclists bussed to the Grimsel Kulm and then cycled down towards Oberwald in the morning. Then in the evening they caught up with the bus at Gletsch for the haul up, alighted at Grimsel Kulm and we left them there to cycle down into the valley towards Meiringen. Several times passing the bus on the fast descent! What a superb way to spend a day out !!!
We left the bus at Meiringen, catching the next train to Interlaken with time for a short break at Brienze, arriving back at Wilderswil and our hotel very happy but tired bunnies!!!
