Chihuahua - the big state

Ciudad Juarez Travel Blog › entry 5 of 25 › view trip summary

Following the trend of blogs about the life and history in people's own city or region I've decided to create a separate Blog for Juarez and Chihuahua region because, to be honest, it wouldn't be fair (to the other states) if I included them in my other blog.

Chihuahua - the big state

Chihuahua's localization

Chihuahua is the biggest of the 31 states that form the Mexican Republic.  It is located in the north part of the country and is surrounded by the Mexican states of Durango, Coahuila, Sonora and Sinaloa and the American States of New Mexico and Texas. The size of Chihuahua is of 244,938 km², making it bigger than the UK (according to wikipedia), so don't be shocked when I say that the bus from Ciudad Juarez to Chihuahua takes aprox. 7 hours.

Chihuahua is divided in 67 municipalities. The capital city is Chihuahua, but its biggest city is where I live, Ciudad Juarez. The total population of the state is of about 3.2 million, 63 % of that population is distributed in the two biggest cities.

Among the noticeable things about Chihuahua or places to visit I must include:

  • Chihuahua, Chihuahua
  • Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua
  • Barrancas del cobre (Copper Canyon)
  • Paquimé
  • Villa Ahumada, Chihuahua
  • Parral, Chihuahua
  • Chihuahua Desert

This is one of my favourite bars in Ciudad Juarez, used to go there at least once a week after Uni. This bar is really place where you go with your friends to chill out for a while and have some drinks and maybe chat for a while.

It has two floors, the second floor is good because you can have a look at the city or the street while you drink, but I haven't been there much. On the first floor you some small tables and some couches, along with a few tv's if you want to watch some sport event while drinking.

There is also a jukebox that works with dollars, I think you can have 3 songs for a dollar. The beer is very cheap, because on the early afternoon you can have 3 beers for $30 pesos and on the night and late afternoon you can have 2 beers for the same $30 pesos. They have a wide selection of mexican beers.

On the weekends, when people are decently drunk, somewhat after midnight, a guy comes in and sings ranchera songs which you'll totally love once you're drunk.
