Cafe du Monde
We had a short day, so we concentrated on one particular area. I have lived in the New Orleans area my whole life, so I thought I would highlight a few things for those who would like to visit our great city! We started out with a visit to Cafe du Monde for the world famous beignets. For those of you who don't know what that is, it is a type of doughnut, square in shape, deep fried and covered in powered sugar. When you top it off with a cup of cafe au lait (coffee with milk), you have a winning combination! From there, we visited the shops along the streets. We had to get another New Orleans fav ~~ pralines! Yum! (We love to eat here and we know how to do it!) Then we walked down to the outdoor Flea Market where you can buy just about anything! From there, we went to Jackson Square, which was named after Andrew Jackson (see pic).
Andrew Jackson
That's where we saw the street band playing Jazz music and the horse and buggy for hire! We visited the St. Louis Cathedral and the Cabildo Museum. Lots of history here! We walked up and down the streets visiting more shops and bought a couple of things. Then we went to the Riverwalk. What a view! We waited awhile for the street car (called a trolley car in most places). It never came, so we just walked along the river awhile. That's where we saw the steamboat Natchez and had our pic taken by some very nice people we met there. Just as we were about to leave, the street car finally came, but we were already back at our car by then. Maybe next time. It was a short day, but very nice. The weather was great, breezy and not hot. We are planning to go back another day to finish what we started. If anyone would like to visit and has any questions, I would be happy to answer them if I can.
Cafe du Monde Beignets
Located just off the Riverwalk in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Cafe du Monde is known around the country for its famous beignets. These are square shaped, deep fried donut type desserts sprinkled with confecioner's sugar (Personally, I like mine covered in confectioner's sugar, not just sprinkled!). You can have your choice of beverage to go along with the beignets, but the beverage of choice is cafe au lait ~ hot coffee with milk. There are some copy cat places, but none can compare to the original Cafe du Monde! When visiting the New Orleans area, this is a must visit attraction!
