If u find the typical bustling major metropolis too fast paced for ur liking, u might want to consider paying this city a visit. It is generally a 'walkable' city, or if u can rent a bike or bicycle conveniently at many shops around in town. An inexpensive way or getting around in town while the lodging and cost of meals are also easy on the pocket as well. Thus, if that sounds like what you are looking for, then the hospitality of the Lao people will certainly welcome warmly with open arms. A landlocked country, there are many border crossings from her neighbours such as Thailand - Udon Thani / Nong Khai (to Vientiane) or Mukdahan (to Savannakhet) or Lao Bao crossing from Quang Tri province, Vietnam (also to Savannakhet).
Otherwise, you can choose to fly from Bangkok, a popular and easy option (to Luang Prabang etc) via Bangkok Airways, or from Strung Treng, Phnom Penh, Cambodia etc... Even for Thai Airways, expect to stopover for transit (Depending, the transit period can take up much of your time which u would want to spend in Laos itself instead) before it embarks on an hour and 10 minutes flight from Bkk to Vte.
