If u find the typical bustling major metropolis too fast paced for ur liking, u might want to consider paying this city a visit. It is generally a 'walkable' city, or if u can rent a bike or bicycle conveniently at many shops around in town. An inexpensive way or getting around in town while the lodging and cost of meals are also easy on the pocket as well. Thus, if that sounds like what you are looking for, then the hospitality of the Lao people will certainly welcome warmly with open arms. A landlocked country, there are many border crossings from her neighbours such as Thailand - Udon Thani / Nong Khai (to Vientiane) or Mukdahan (to Savannakhet) or Lao Bao crossing from Quang Tri province, Vietnam (also to Savannakhet).

Otherwise, you can choose to fly from Bangkok, a popular and easy option (to Luang Prabang etc) via Bangkok Airways, or from Strung Treng, Phnom Penh, Cambodia etc... There are many gateways to Laos, depending on your preference. At present, there is an absence of direct flights from most countries in the world. Even for Thai Airways, expect to stopover for transit (Depending, the transit period can take up much of your time which u would want to spend in Laos itself instead) before it embarks on an hour and 10 minutes flight from Bkk to Vte. Laos's international carrier as well as domestic carrier, Lao Airlines, offers flights between major cities in the country.

However, do take note that it is not possible to fly between 2 cities, provinces of your choice i.

e. if you are in Luang Prabang, you can only choose to go to Vientiane or Pakse. The flights might be a bit costly for some but I guess it is ok to say the flights quite safe with smooth landing and take off (having taken the flights thrice during my visit), contrary to what u will probably read in some articles or websites. And it is an attractive option, as with many other countries, reduces the duration of overland trips if time is really of essence for ur vacation. If not, you might want to consider mini van or luxury VIP overnight sleeper i.e. a 13 hour overnight journey from Vientiane to Savannakhet. You can find a few travel agencies and also Lao Airlines Head Office along Pangkham Road. And don't forget those motion sickness pills if you are prone to feeling nauseous or dizzy in such conditions.
