Haleakala Sunrise Tour

I had to catch the tour bus at 2AM in the morning by the Banyan Tree on Front Street since I was not staying at a hotel.  I was told that the temperature on top of the crater is very cold (30 degrees or less) so I had to borrow some winter clothing so that I did not freeze to death!  The tour bus was right on time.  After picking up the rest of passengers, we arrived at the bike shop in  Old Haiku (close to Paia).  Here the bikers picked up the biking gears and signed a waiver for the risks involved.  The bikes were then loaded and we headed off to the crater.  We arrived at the Haleakala Crater around 5:30AM and waited for the sun to show up.  It was cold...brrrr.  We were encouraged to go into the visitors center and warm up if we got too cold.

Finally the sky began to lit up little by little...what an awesome sight...it was just spectacular and defiitely worth the trip!  It was now daylight as we headed back down the steep mountain.  The tour bus stopped at a flat landing and let off the bikers so that they could ride down the mountain all the way back to the bike shop!  I wished I had plan to do this second leg of the trip but next time now that I know what is involved (thought I had to bike all the way to the top of the hill!).  It looked like a lot of fun...just sit on that bike, steer and control the speed that you go down...absolutely no pedalling involved...wow, my type of biking!
