Compared to British trains, the seats and the legroom were both fab and it was a great journey, with an observation car, the daylight stretch of the journey is a pleasure - the open Pacific filling the windows on the left, and highlights such as the spooky space architecture of Vandenberg AFB on the right. As expected, the train arrived late in Santa Barbara and fell further behind schedule as the day went on.
With no Amtrak station in San Fransisco, a bus shuttle takes you across the Bay to the Ferry Building - I was back where I had started, 11 days before. Being dumped on San Francisco waterfront at 11pm at night is an experience, but not one I'd like to repeat regularly. It took me a good 20 minutes to unbox and re-assemble my bike from the box Amtrak insist you use, and having a police car arrest someone in front of me as I set off did nothing to lessen my nervousness. So, I warily cycled North around the waterfront, heading for the Youth Hostel at Fort Mason and a very welcome bunk bed.
