Visiting the 'Jewel of the Rideau'
My final stop for the day was in Merrickville, a quick drive down the road from the Clowes Locks. Merrickville is a popular stop for many, full of many historic buildings, good food, knick knacks, and three sets of locks.
I parked my car up the main street and walked down toward the water. I spent some time walking through the Blockhouse, one of four along the canal that was meant as a fortification against American invasion. Lots of history in there. They even had some of a schoolhouse put into the blockhouse, to show how things were set up back in the 1800s.
I then wandered around the locks, catching a photographer taking pictures of a groom and his groomsmen on my way to have lunch. I ate at a place called Serendipity, and I highly recommend it. After that, I made my way back up the main street, stopping in the odd shop along the way. Stop in at Mrs McGarrigles as they have not only their own mustards and preserves, but ones from different parts of the world, as well as all sorts of candies and chocolates!
Next stops will be in a couple of weeks....
