We stayed last night in a freedom camping area on the beach front at Tolaga Bay, it is an area that you need to have a permit to stay, GDC issue permits for 3 days or a week or so and they assign camp areas, very good idea.  Any way we didn’t have a permit but noone checked so we got a free night. we went down the road a few hundred metres for breakfast then headed south for napier. We stopped at Gisbourne for coffee, good coffee but a horrible city, its so run down and people are not friendly, we did meet a couple of ladies at Cpt Cook staute that were nice but generally so many angry looking people. We stopped at Morere for a soak in the hot pools, didnt know they were there until we saw signs on the road, Only $6 to get in, had a really nice walk thru Nikaus and bush to get to the Nikaus Pools. It was really raining hard there which seemed fitting, some nice people there even a couple from Germany on holiday here with there 2 kids, They were here 15 years ago, they told me about Cologne in Germany near where they live, Has some highest steeple or soemthing. Drove onto Napier, had a look around the town and had a beer at Rosies Irish bar. Then on to Haumoana domain by the beach. Looks very good, has a sign saying max 2 nights and must have Self Contained sticker, two other vans here, one is a van that hasnt got a SC sticker and the other is a house truck that doesnt appear to have one either.
