Being my 3rd full day in Singapore, I wanted to see more of what the city had to offer.  For a change, I thought I would take in some of the modern cultural and commercial scene.  I walked from the Gallery Hotel to Fort Canning Park, up a serious set of stairs and towards Orchard Rd.  It's not difficult to find a road, all you have to do is ensure you're not travelling parallel to it.  Passing through two parks was a wonderful way to begin the day.  Once on Orchard Rd., I procured a cup of coffee and proceeded to take in the 'sights'.  It was a pleasant enough walk.  I found the Hard Rock Cafe and various other tourist magnets.  Continuing on, I came upon the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

A morning (or day) at the Singapore Botanic Gardens is a wonderful experience.

If you're going to Singapore for 5 days or longer, consider making this a 'down' day in the middle of your stay.  Your legs will thank you.  That's not to say you won't be doing any walking; the place is huge.  In my estimation, it was a soothing experience, a stroll.  You can pack lunch or get something to eat at the restaurant or the snackbar.   I would like to have spent more time roaming the grounds.  If you're lucky, you might get to meet some of the less well known denizens of the park.

When I decided to move on, I retraced my steps to Orchard Rd., stopping off to purchase some pins (gifts for a friend in The States) at the Hard Rock Cafe.  As it was now early afternoon, I decided to take the MRT back towards my hotel, in order to drop off my purchase, after which I would have a pint or two and cool down.

I found Penny Black to be the perfect remedy for what ailed me.  Penny Black is a lovely establishment overlooking the river.  Styled after a traditional English pub, it did more than a fair job of achieving the desired effect.  The British expats at the next table contributed to the 'authentic feel'. ;)  While recuperating at Penny Black, I watched as a storm approached and thought it best to wend my way 'home'.  I didn't get far before the rain came.  Taking advantage of the opportunity presented (which had become a downpour) I ducked into the next promising establishment I encountered: Brewerkz.

Still to come:  An interesting dining experience, 1 of 6 brewpubs
