Amazing Iceland

The itty bitty parliament

Whew, I've had some hectic days in Iceland, but boy, was it worth it! I arrived on Wednesday afternoon and left early Saturday morning, and in this short period of time I managed to visit colleagues at the parliament, the embassy, swim in the Blue Lagoon, admire the view of the city from the top of the Hallgrim church, and go on a long bus trip out to the countryside and see the site of the first Icelandic parliament, an enormous waterfall (Gullfoss) and geysirs. What an incredible tour - such a beautiful and desolate landscape! Wherever you looked, there was another picturesque scenery. We felt rushed beyond belief, getting on and off the bus and taking photos like crazy whenever we could. As a result, we now have hundreds of photos that could win any competition for nature photos or scenic landscapes.

What have I learned? Iceland isn't a civilized country, because there was no warm milk served with my coffee (but that's how it is all over Scandinavia). ;) Also, they claim puffin is a delicacy, but don't believe them! It smells very strongly of liver and tastes even more so. One of my colleagues ate a whole puffin menu at a restaurant and then looked very greenish in the face, poor woman. We also ate whale meat, which was a very strange experience. Had the ambassador known, she would have been appalled, so we didn't tell her...
