Mountain Biking Through the Santa Monica Mountains.

Way too early in the morning loading the truck.

I had a few days off so I decided to visit an old friend in LA. For a couple of years he'd been asking me to go mountain biking with him. His idea of mountain biking was more intense than I ever imagined. Fortunately he has several bikes and was able to lend me some gear for the trip. Everything from the bike and helmet to shoes, glasses, a camel pack, and gloves. The strenuous and difficult journey didn't worry me so much as did the fact he was letting me borrow his $2000 mountain bike. Hope he's insured! lol!!

We began our journey at the top of Reseda Blvd in the San Fernando Valley. We geared up, packed snacks and plenty of Gatorade. My friends Dad and a few of his buddies met us at the trail head. We were going to ride the Will Rodgers Back Bone Trail.

The Gang
The Backbone Trail passes over the peaks and through the canyons of the Santa Monica Mountains, it climbs and falls in elevation nearly constantly. Parts of the trail lie within the city limits of Los Angeles and Malibu, CA; the rest sits in unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Dozens of bike riders, hikers, and horse back riders frequent the trail.

The trail started off rather easy due to the fact that we begin at a higher altitude, however the trail terrain changes constantly varying from mildly easy to extremely difficult. Since this was my first time I found myself carrying my bike though extremely rough terrain and steep hills. However most of the trail I was able to conquer.

Finally, after a couple of hours we crossed the bridge and had an amazing view of the Santa Monica mountains on one side, and a view of the ocean on the other. The trail descends towards Will Rogers State Park Road from the park down to Sunset Blvd. The view is amazing, in the distance towards the west you can see Malibu. If you glance northeast you have a few of the San Fernando Valley and beyond that you can see down town Los Angeles.

It was a pretty amazing payoff considering the difficult journey there. However it wasn't over yet. We had to eventually turn around and take the same trail back to reach the truck where we parked. We said our good byes to the view and made our way back. Unfortunately, the way back was more uphill than the way there. We made our way back through the Santa Monica mountains which took us approximately two hours. This had to be the most intensive work out I've ever done.

We finally made it back to the Truck and said our good byes. I was extremely happy considering I am an amateur rider who conquered an expert trail. I was definitely inspired by this trip and am planning to purchase my own bike and gear and do it again... Just as soon as I can save up $2000 plus dollars, or rob a bank! :)
