In the afternoon we went to the Live Crib, a nativity play, which was held at Aras Chronain (an Irish Club where Irish traditions are being promoted). This play is held every year and very popular. The kids like the live animals best of course! There were also collections for local charities and tea, coffee, mulled wine and cakes were available with proceeds going to the same charities.
At night Santa came to the estate, with the big man himself on a trailer behind a car going around the estate with music blaring, and people walking behind admiring the lights in the gardens and houses. When the car stopped Santa read out some letters written to him by kids in the estate, the lights on the tree were lit and carrolls were sung. It was freezing cold, I don't think I've ever experienced such cold in Ireland!
The advantage of staying with friends or family or knowing a place yourself is that you get to experience these things organised by the local community. Normally you would not even know about these things!
