Town Hall by day
This was definitely the highlight of my time here in this country so far. It felt an honour to be part of such a magical, wonderful evening. This was the 54th time this event has been held in Gouda. An event which marks the lighting of the Norwegian Christmas tree received as a gift from their twinned town of Kongsberg in Norway.

A fairytale setting in this wonderful, old city which enjoys a variety of performances throughout the day before the lighting of the candles. The entire market square is lit only by candlelight, in each window of the Gothic 15th century Town Hall and also the houses and shops around the perimeter of the square. The hairs stood up on the back of the neck whilst listening to over an hour of Christmas carols (or it could have been the cold, stood around for hours at -5 degrees celcius can do that too!) A number of speeches were given by the Mayor of Gouda and also the Norwegian Mayor of Kongsberg (who bravely attempted to speak Dutch - good job!) before the tree itself was lit with 6000 real candles! Beautiful sight to behold.
