Lena ordering lunch

Today is the day after Christmas day, and a holiday here in Sweden. Stores are open having after Christmas sales, but not all stores, and everything else is closed.

I woke up around 8:00am, and even though it is dark out, I could tell it snowed last night and still is, and the wind is blowing around pretty good. I fixed some coffee, and then waited for Lena to wake up. After coffee and some cereal, we packed up our things and figured out what we needed for tomorrows trip to Kiruna, and then to the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi. We will be spending one more night here, but since we need to get up around 4:30am on the 27th to catch a train to the airport, we are packing everything now and only keeping what we need for the trip north.

Göran will be by tonight to get the rest of our luggage and take it to his house and store it there until we arrive back in Gävle on the 29th.

Once our bags were packed and taken to moms, Lena and I walked to the train station to purchase tomorrow’s tickets to the airport. It’s snowing out, but lightly, and the temperature is just above freezing -1C. When we arrived at the train station, we found the ticket machines were not excepting new transactions, and with today being a holiday, there was no one there to help out or purchase tickets from. At first we thought it was our bank card, but we were not the only ones having issues. We decided to walk through a couple of the small indoor shopping malls they have, then got a hotdog at one of the stands set up in town. Lena decided to get a hamburger, even though she does not like them back in the States.

My hotdog.
It must have gotten warmer out because it is now sleeting. Hope it doesn’t turn to rain! After our little walk, it was back to moms to buy tickets online, but to no avail. It seems the whole system is down!! Ok, so we’ll just get on the train and pay cash when asked for tickets, unless the machines are working again in the morning.

Even though the weather was a bit bad, we decided to take a little bus ride to another part of Gävle to where the local hockey team plays. We are both huge Washington Capitals hockey fans, and one of our best players, Niklas Bäckström, is from Gävle and played here all through his career until signed with the Capitals at age 19. It is now snowing out and definitely getting colder, but the bus ride only took 15 minutes and the walk to the stadium where Niklas Bäckström played was only another 10 minutes. There is a small store here selling the local hockey club gear, but they had nothing with Bäckströms name on it.

They did show us a very small #19 jersey he used to wear when he was a small kid…which he signed the last time he visited town. I did buy a t-shirt with the local clubs name on it, and then we made the short walk back to the bus stop. Once off the bus, we took the long way home so I could get some more pictures. We had fun playing in the snow, which is coming down pretty good now!

Once home, Lena fixed us Blod Pudding (Blood Pudding) for dinner. It’s basically sausage made from pigs blood which you slice and fry in butter. It’s actually better than it sounds, and I had eaten this once before on a previous trip here.

After dinner, we watched some TV and around 9:00pm, Göran & Lisa came by to get our luggage to store at their house while we are at the Ice Hotel.

This will be my last journal entry until we get back to Gävle. Thank you every one who has been reading this so far and smiling at all my pictures and ramblings. Tomorrow, we’re headed north of the Arctic Circle and to the Ice Hotel!!
