Lena in our changing room after our night in the ice room.
The next thing I knew, one of the staff members was waking me up at 8:00am and offering me some nice warm lingonberry juice! When I got out of the sleeping bag, it hit me how very cold it was. Every thing that was not inside the sleeping bag with me was frozen. As warm as it was inside the sleeping bag, the outer shell was frozen, giving you an idea of how well insulated the sleeping bags are! I slept very well in the -5C temperature, other than waking up a couple times when Lena got up. This was a great experience, and I’m sure glad we slept here, but now that we did it, the next time we come up here we’ll be spending all our nights in a warm room!
I found Lena in our changing room waiting for me to get up.
She said there were a lot of people up and about all through the night. I guess she wasn’t the only one that had problems sleeping. We went to our designated shower rooms, showered and dressed, then headed out for breakfast. It is still snowing and about -17C outside. We had another great breakfast, and took our time eating since we had no plans or activities planned today. We were scheduled to board our bus taking us to Kiruna airport at 2:30pm, so we just spent the day hanging out and relaxing. After we checked out just before 11:00am, we received a diploma for spending the night in an ice room. This was a nice surprise!
We ate lunch around 1:00pm, which again was excellent! Today they had warm baked Salmon and potatoes, along with all the different shaved meats, cheese, smoked salmon, bread, salad and soup.
After our fill of all the yummy food, we took a walk around the complex, and what a surprise, the sun it trying to show through the clouds!! The sun never really comes up here, it just appears over the horizon for a few hours, and then disappears again.
The moon and stars are out while we wait to board the bus taking us to the airport.
It’s now time to leave this cold, icy, but very beautiful place. It’s dark out now, but the sky is clear and we can see the almost full moon and stars. Too bad we weren’t doing a night trip to see the Northern Lights tonight…oh well, next time! We are sad we are leaving here, we had a great time and look forward to the day we can return!! We boarded the bus around 2:30 pm and headed to Kiruna to catch our scheduled 3:55pm flight back to Stockholm. A hotel staff member checked us off a list to be sure everyone was on board, and then bid us all a fond farewell. The trip to the airport was quick, but we sure did have a nice surprise when we got there!!! Check back later to read about all the fun we had at the Kiruna airport! :)
Good bye Ice Hotel, it was GREAT!!!
