Hey everyone! I have a little less than thirteen minutes left on the computer here at the hostel in Greece, so I'll do my best to write fast!!! A few days ago, my class went to Venice on a three day field trip and we had a really fun time. We stayed on the island of Lido, which is kind of like a suburb of Venice and is about a 15 minute ferry ride to the main Venice area. We spent our first full day touring the center of Venice around St Marks Square and the surrounding area. One of the funnest things that I did there was to pop open an umbrella and make all the pigeons fly away...these pigeons are so used to humans that there is little you can do to scare them...My umbrella would create a force field affect whenever I would open it.
This maze of mirrors and glass was my favorite
..I actually created quite a scene in the square, causing these hundreds of pigeons to suddenly fly away. The bird seller ladies even yelled at me :) Anyway, the city was amazing and different from any other that we've been to in Italy. It's amazing how they live there with that much water! St Marks Square gets flooded quite often, most recently up to three feet of water! Anyway, other highlights included eating Burger King for dinner one night and going to this really amazing show called the Biennele. Its an annual show that alternates between art and architecture and has like 40 countries participate each year.
Yesterday morning, a group of 10 of us took the 6:15 boat from Lido to Marco Polo airport to catch our flight to Athens.
We got into Athens around 5 pm after our layover in Rome. One thing to note from that day was that Italians are notorious for not caring about time! If our flight was scheduled to depart at 10:55 am, we would barely be boarding the plane at 10:50...so frustrating!! Anyway, we got into Athens and checked into our hostel called Athens Backpackers. It was rated number one hostel in Athens by hostelworld.com and is REALLY nice by hostel standards. My experience at the London hostel was pretty bad so it makes this one look like a palace! And two of use got upgraded to a suite about 5 minutes away from the main hostel so we have our own bathroom in the room, kitchen, couch and tv. Today we got up pretty early and went over to the Acropolis to check out the Parthenon and the Agora.
Free ketchup, ice in the soda and cheaper than Italy? Too good to be true!
It was so amazing to be up there. I never realized how incredible high the hill of the acropolis is...its jaw dropping. It was a pretty long climb to get to the top, but well worth it. The views of Athens are amazing from up there and you can really see just how dense the city is. After our time there, we went to the old Olympic stadium from the early 20th century and then checked out some gardens. It started raining REALLY hard this afternoon while we were shopping so we decided to duck into a little cafe and grab a snack...which turned into a roast pork gyros meal for me! It was extremely tasty! Well, I've got to publish this pretty quick cause I only have a minute left...Leaving for Santorini in the morning...
