Today, in advance of setting off, we headed into Florianopolis with Mark to prepare the documentation for the car. Once all of that was done we went for a nice lunch with Mark and the kids (Alex, Kian and Freddie) to his favourite por kilo restaurant, which was very nice. Then we set off for the long journey to Porto Alegre (560 km from Florianopolis). Mark had described the road as death road. With the exception of a few stretches of two lane each way traffic the majority of the road was one lane each side and full of traffic and pot holes. It was mostly trucks who were crazy about overtaking each other especially coming up to bends, bridges or anything else that might have obscured their view. Pretty hair-raising!!

On some occasions it bucketed rain and the visibility was shocking. However, our trusty Land Rover Defender 110 enjoyed every minute of it. We could not travel as quickly as we would have liked because of all of the traffic. As night time approached we had a nasty little surprise….our headlights weren’t working!! Fortunately the place we pulled in to check them was a police station and they very kindly directed us to a nearby garage and with our not so amazing Portuguese we managed to explain the problem and managed to get it all fixed in under 20 minutes and all for the bargain price of £25. Back on the road, lights working, all was good as the road then morphed into a 3 lane motorway, which was much more pleasant and way less stressful. We arrived into Porto Alegre at 22:30, starving and tired. So we grabbed a quick McDonalds and struggled to find the direction for the centre of town. Everyone kept giving us random directions. We eventually found a very nice hotel (City Hotel, Porto Alegre) and checked in and went to sleep
