So I arranged a tour after bargaining the price to 1200baht from 3000baht, to go and do a hill tribe trek which included an elephant ride and white water rafting. I have talked to many backpackers including one on trek that feel the elephant part is not justified and cruel. We first visited a butterfly farm which I enjoyed; at first I thought it would be boring. We then hiked to the village which was great; we had a good size group with a range of people from everywhere. The two little kids legged it the whole time too. The village was so surreal and the tribe was friendly and never asked for money. The meals were great and the tour guide cooked a pig; best meat I ever had. We played some volley ball and danced by the camp fire and told some stories at night.
The next day we went and saw the elephants and did our ride, the guy said you want to switch and I soon became sitting on the elephant's neck or even head just about.
The next event was white water rafting this was my 2nd time and I enjoyed it as the rapids were not that fast but there were a couple of good bits, and we did some bombing off a rock cliff half way. This concluded the tour and I highly recommend doing one of these while in Chang Mai.
I then organised to see the Gibbon which is a zip wire, this cost me 1500baht discounted from 2000baht and ended up getting free lunch there. I did it with a Thai English family and we all had great fun, there were about 18 wires to cross; long, short, across, down and a few bridges. My first time doing zip wire and it was awesome and got a beer after too, found a cool turtle at bottom of last wire.
