It was wednesday morning, and after eating breakfast we picked my mother in Law up at her house in Scheveningen at 8 o'clock and went to the Weihnachtsmarkt in Essen, Germany. We all three were looking forward to it. It was the first time that Wim's mother came along so she didn't know what to expect. For us it was a normal trip, we do it every year. But we enjoy it every time! On the way we had a traffic-jam near Gouda/Utrecht but we didn't lose much time fortunatly. The weather in the Netherlands wasn't so good, it rained a little, but when we got more and more to Germany it became better, even the sun came sometimes. So we got lucky! We had so much fun spending our day in Essen, it was not to crowded, it was really nice! We always go for a Weihnachtsmarkt in the first week of december. If you go later, it's much more crowded! We eat bratwurst mit brödchen and Reibekuchen which are German potato fritters that are characteristic to the Rheinland area. Reibekuchen are usually eaten with apple sauce or pumpernickel bread. We also drank some Glühwein. You'll have to do that for sure when you go to a weihnachtsmarkt, it's the hole atmosphere that makes it special! When we went home at the end of the afternoon we had a couple of traffic-jams on the way so that wasn't nice but the day itself was perfect, we had a lovely time! Till next year!!!
