Back to Hanoi

Waking up in a junk's cabin surrounded by small high islands gives a surrealistic feeling. After breakfast ankor was lifted and we took up our trip along the islands until noon when we arrived back in the harbour. There was a gigantic number of junks, they were not allowed to sail anymore because of the bad weather prediction. We were so lucky that our Ha Long Bay trip started Sunday instead of today. We would have missed a unique landscape!
A small bus took us back to Hanoi to our hotel in Han Bac, a tipical street in the old quarter. First thing to do was make reservations for tonights performance in the waterpuppet theatre, close to the hotel. Next we had a stroll to Hoan Kiem lake. This lake in the center of Hanoi has a small island with a nice temple, reacheable by a beautiful red bridge.
I was not in such high spirits for the waterpuppets, thinking this would be a tourist trap. But it is so Vietnamese. Well we bought the tickets so we were ready for it. To my big surprise this turned out to be a lovely evening. The show started with music, life performed by an orchestre with local intruments and two female singers. This music also accompanied the puppet show. Some more then ten scenes are shown: from water and fire spiting dragons, the fisherman in chase for fish and a boat race. If you want to see the show - and you should! - do like we did and pay a little extra, so that you have tickets for the first rows.
