Petra by night

the mountain path
The night tour happens twice a week, and is highly recommended. The crowd gathers together and following a briefing walks down the path through the siq, with the final destination being the Treasury - El Khazneh. It was the first time entering the Rose City for me, I would do so again several times during daylight over the next few days. But I am glad to have seen it this way first. The path was lit with burning lights placed every so often providing beautiful ambience that contrasted nicely with a sky that was like curtain of black with a million stars peeping through the holes. To imagine walking down back in the days when a hidden city full of bustling life was contained within was a somewhat surreal contemplation. Finally the narrow walls give way to what is like a roofless cavern, and there carved out of the wall in front is the magnificent El Khazneh. The scene had been set up with candles all around, and people sat down in a mesmerized hush soaking in the atmosphere while a man sang a poignant tale accompanied by the eerie sounds of a live instrument. Tour staff were quietly doing the rounds and ensuring everyone got a glass of the ridiculously sweet hot tea with fresh mint that is so much a part of the way of life for the Bedouin. After some time as everybody headed back up the path, I decided to linger towards the back with the hope of capturing some slow shutter photos... All in all a magical night :)
