Light in Africa

Me and baby Jack.
Today we took the day off work and went to the Light in Africa Orphanage. I don't really know how to describe it. Very sad. The lady who started it gave up everything she had in the world to help the orphans (literally everything. She left her husband and salary behind.). We all giggled a bit at the way she described her vision of Jesus telling her to help the children, but really part of me is wondering if thats how God works sometimes. Anyway, the kids were adorable. All little, little babies, about 6 months to 3 years old. One baby had a particularly powerful story... baby Jack was the youngest one there. Police found him abandoned on the side of the road when he was, as the folks at the orphanage estimated, just 2 weeks old. He's doing well now, but seriously, how sad is that.

I loved being there but at the same time it was really difficult. All I wanted to do was pick them up and play with them, but I was mad at myself because I had to work really, really hard to get past the fact that they were peeing all over themselves and us. What did I expect? There were 20 or so babies in the room and the orphanage is very understaffed - they rely on volunteers to run. Most of what we are blessed with in the
US - take for example, the grocery store shelves full of packaged huggies diapers - just isn't available to them. But then, when we went to leave, one little girl named Sarah (who I had earlier mistook for a boy... I'm lost when I don't have the skirts to help me distinguish) was clinging to my hand. She wouldn't let go. I literally had to pry her off one finger at a time while she cried in the doorway. And that was even more difficult to deal with than the peed-in, soggy pants.
