Northern California 2007

A trip to visit my sister in McKinleyville California to help her plan her wedding....but mostly to vacation, eat, drink and have a good time.

An overview

A random roadside tourist attraction. It’s a hollowed out redwood, strange.

After many delays in my flight and an entire day of (12:00-9:00) flying only from Boise to Northern California I finally got in to the tiny Arcata/Eureka airport. Flying in was so beautiful on my little noisy propeller plane which swayed back and forth with the wind. I haven’t been to northern California since I was a child and I never truly knew the beauty. It is so green and lush here.

All three towns: McKinleyville, Arcata, & Eureka are very small and cute, very much a  ‘hippy’ world. Things are pretty quite here but I was told things pretty much die when college is out for the summer. The best part of these little towns are all the parks in the surrounding area. The redwoods are huge and overwhelming.

We decided to venture on down the coast and drove down 101 and the 1 Highways to Fort Bragg, The highway is very breath taking, I never knew California was so pretty, this was a very unexpected surprise. Fort Bragg is very much a little touristy town with cute little shops and restaurants. It’s right on the ocean and they actually have a glass beach there. Once people used this beach as a dump and now it’s covered in sea glass; glass from the dump that’s been tumbled by the sea into little stone like glass pieces. The entire beach is covered in it.

All in all I enjoyed my quick trip to Northern California. I would love to visit again, but next time I’ll bring warmer clothes, It’s chilly there!
