Colombo, Ceylon
Many years of war has taken it's toll on this city. The central area ,the Fort, has been mostly deserted. Most off the buildings have bullit holes in them and many have been just left to decay. Many streets are blocked off with oil drums and armed police. As well as the army.
We hired a car and driver for 6 hours for about $25 from the Hilton hotel right in town. Best in the city. There is one old colonial hotel and they do not let you take pictures outside the windows.
The part I liked best was Pettah. That is the very busy market are. That is the life of the city. I enjoyed that the best. The rest of the city spreads out pretty far.
A nice place to stop for a drink or tea, remember you are in Ceylon, is the Galle Face Hotel. Worth a visit just to see the doorman and floorwalker.
City seemed pretty safr. People very friendly. Worth visiting. I have not been to the rest of the island but people who have told me it is very beautiful.
